Coffee News Recap, 28 Jan: Colombian 2021 production down 9%, global cold brew market set to grow by over 26% by 2025 & other stories

Every Friday, Perfect Daily Grind rounds up the top coffee industry news from the previous week. Here are this week’s stories.

  • Mon, 24 Jan – Starbucks Indonesia opens new Experience Centre. As parts of its 20th anniversary campaign, Starbucks opened the Coffee Experience Centre at the Starbucks Dewata Coffee Sanctuary in Bali. The interactive centre showcases Indonesian coffee culture and Starbucks’ roasting process, as well as the work of Starbucks’ Farmer Support Centre in North Sumatra.
  • Tue, 25 Jan – Taf opens new retail location at Athens International Airport. The Greek roaster’s new café is located in the EU Schengen departure area. The new location will be open until May 2022 and will reopen from November 2022 to March 2023. All Taf coffee products are available at the coffee shop, including equipment and accessories.
  • Tue, 25 Jan – World Latitude Caffè Prize 2022 announces winners. The awards scheme focuses on coffee quality and sustainability. This year’s awards received some 2,500 entries from 67 countries. Winners include Japan’s Sarutahiko Coffee and Peet’s Coffee.
  • Tue, 25 Jan – Winner of 2021 Kenya AeroPress Championship announced. The event was held at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, and was hosted by Spring Valley Coffee and African Coffee Roasters. Spring Valley Coffee barista Vivian Wanjiru Muthoni placed first in the competition. Muthoni will represent Kenya at the World AeroPress Championships in Melbourne on 5 March, 2022.
  • Tue, 25 Jan – New coffee shop mobile app Orda launches. The platform allows coffee shops of any size to launch their own digital payment-integrated mobile ordering app. Orda works with digital payment service Square and deliveries are available through DoorDash.
  • Tue, 25 Jan – Registration dates set for US Coffee Championships. US entrants for the Cup Tasters, Coffee in Good Spirits, Roaster, and Latte Art Championships can register from 1 February 2022. Nominations for Brewers Cup and Barista Championships will begin on 25 January 2022. All championships will be held at the 2022 Specialty Expo.
  • Tue, 25 Jan – Twelve5 expands Rebel Hard Coffee line. The Double Mocha BOLDER Hard Latte and Salted Caramel BOLDER Hard Latte both contain 8% alcohol. The new flavours will be available at select retailers in the US.
  • Wed, 26 Jan – Diedrich Roasters launches new DR-3 machine. The Diedrich DR-3 model will replace the earlier Diedrich IR-1 and IR-2.5 models. The new machine can accommodate batches from 1kg to 3kg. Features include an integrated side panel for automated data storage and logging.
  • Wed, 26 Jan – UK advertising watchdog bans new Oatly marketing campaign. The Advertising Standards Authority received over 100 complaints over Oatly’s claims that cutting out meat and dairy is the single biggest lifestyle change that reduces environmental impact. The ASA concluded Oatly “overstated” its claims and therefore the advertisements were misleading.
  • Thu, 27 Jan – SCA announces 2022 Sustainability Awards finalists. The awards consists of three categories: Business Model, Project, and Individual. Finalists include Caravela Coffee for the Business Model category, Anacafé for the Project category, and founder of Coffee Coalition for Racial Equity Phyllis Johnson. Winners will be announced on 7 March at Re:co Symposium.
  • Thu, 27 Jan – Italy reapplies for UNESCO protected status for espresso. Italy’s 2021 UNESCO application was denied as two different agencies filed simultaneously. The Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food, and Forestry Policies approved the 2022 submission, but the application further requires approval from the Italian National UNESCO Commission, followed by UNESCO headquarters.
  • Fri, 28 Jan – Roasting consultant Rob Hoos launches Iteration.Coffee roastery. Hoos is a longtime professional roaster and has previously held roles as Director of Coffee for Nossa Familia. Iteration.Coffee will work to advance innovation and education in the roasting sector, as well as creating coffee box sets for roasters to explore roast profiles and product designs.
  • Fri, 28 Jan – Coffee Fest to launch Food & Beverage Academy in 2022. The new education programme will debut at the Coffee Fest New York event from 6 to 8 March. The academy will explore four different market segments, including “Independent Operator Summit” and “Multi-Unit and Chain Operator Summit”.
  • Fri, 28 Jan – CoE Indonesia 2021 auction results released. The highest bid was US $80 for the honey processed Ateng, Gayo 1, and P88 varieties from the Pantan Musara farm – receiving a total of over US $37,037 for more than 492lbs. Total sales at the auction amounted to over US $360,340.

  • Wed, 19 Jan – Germany’s largest rail network to serve plant milks for first time. Deutsche Bahn will serve Oatly with coffee beverages as part of its sustainability commitments. Deutsche Bahn is one of the largest European railway companies and sold approximately 9.5 million coffee beverages in 2019. The company has pledged to become carbon-neutral by 2040.
  • Thu, 20 Jan – Nespresso partners with social impact start-up on traceability project. OpenSC’s technology allows Nespresso customers to digitally trace coffee from over 1,180 smallholder farmers supplying coffee to the Reviving Origins Kahawa ya Congo line. The OpenSC platform also verifies that each farmer received the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality Programme premium price.
  • Fri, 21 Jan – Average price of espresso rises in Italy. In early 2021, Italian consumer rights group Assoutenti claimed some 75% of Italian cafés increased espresso prices from €1 (US $1.13) to €1.10 (US $1.25). The group claims prices are set to rise again in 2022 to €1.50 (US $1.70).
